The consultation is now closed with 66% of survey respondents supporting option 3. The hedge and concrete will be removed. Turf will be planted with sufficient room around the root zone of trees to ensure their health is maximised. This work will progress in the 2024/25 financial year.

The current situation

The City of Gosnells is proposing changes to the landscaping along the Sandringham Promenade median strip.

Current the median is landscaped with trees, a low hedge, concentre borders and strips of lawn. This landscaping causes issues for road users and the City's Parks Operations staff.

The City has received complaints that the low hedges cause sightline issues for residents along Rufford Lane and those exiting the Golf Course.

The current layout that sees a concrete border between the low hedge and a strip of turf means that Parks Operations staff are unable to easily mow the lawn, needing to use hand held equipment.

The City is proposing to simplify the landscaping to allow better car sightlines and increase the operability of the median. A singular landscaping design will allow our staff to tend to the median in a more efficient manner and save water, all while remaining a visually impressive entrance to the golf course and estate.

Option 1 - involves removing the existing hedging, low concrete barrier and turf to be replaced with mulch.

Option 2 - involves removing the existing hedging, low concrete barrier and turf to be replaced with mulch and new groundcover planting.

Option 3 - involves removing the existing hedging and low concrete barrier to install a fully turfed median.

The benefits of each option are listed below.

Benefits of the proposed options

Option 1

  • Addresses the need to reduce water use due to a drying climate.
  • Dry landscaping reduces the amount of water used in medians, leaving more groundwater for use in public open space.
  • Ensures the trees along the Promenade receive the best possible care and stand out as the main feature along the median.
  • Removes any concerns around sightlines for vehicles turning onto Sandringham Promenade.
  • Removes the concrete border and small strip of grass which is hard to mow efficiently.
  • Allows Parks Operations staff clear access to maintain the median.

Option 2

  • Addresses the need to reduce water use due to a drying climate.
  • Increased dry landscaping (from current levels) reduces the amount of water used in medians, leaving more groundwater for use in public open space.
  • Ensures the trees along the Promenade receive the best possible care and stand out as the main feature along the median.
  • Maintains a visually similar median.
  • Removes any concerns around sightlines for vehicles turning onto Sandringham Promenade.
  • Removes the concrete border and small strip of grass which is hard to mow efficiently.
  • Allows Parks Operations staff clear access to maintain the median.

Option 3

  • Removes any concerns around sightlines for vehicles turning onto Sandringham Promenade.
  • Ensures the trees along the Promenade receive the best possible care and stand out as the main feature along the median.
  • Removes the concrete border and small strip of grass which is hard to mow efficiently.
  • Allows Parks Operations staff clear access to maintain the median.
  • Increasing the level of turf increases the amount of water needed at certain times of the year, and does not meet Waterwise practices. This option is being presented to ensure residents are aware of all options available, however the City would prefer to reduce the water required to maintain this space.
