The City of Gosnells is planning upgrades to Dunnell Park in Maddington.

Dunnell Park includes a Water Corporation main drain that services the wider suburb for stormwater management. As part of this project the City is working with Water Corporation to transform the drain into a living stream.

Proposed inclusions as part of this project are:

  • Upgraded playground equipment including rubber softfall
  • Park furniture including picnic seating, benches, shelter, and waste bins
  • New trees, plants and irrigated turf

You can view the concept plan in the 'document library'.

What is Greenspace Planning?

Greenspace Planning is the City's program of park development. Aimed at increasing the amount of useable public open space and meeting community demands. The program is designed to ensure environmental best practice is implemented in our parks upgrades, especially around the sustainable use of water.

Dunnell Park is a large local park that currently provides limited play and recreation equipment. Following this Greenspace Planning upgrade, Dunnell Park will be classified as a neighbourhood park and contain additional assets. For more information on the City's park classifications and infrastructure inclusion, please review the Park Infrastructure Guide in 'documents'.

What is a living stream?

A living stream is a constructed waterway that mimics the characteristics of a natural stream.

A living stream has characteristics that distinguish it from a drain, which include stable banks and vegetation that provides habitat for native animals such as fish and crayfish, frogs, waterbirds and rakali (water rats). They also provide a more pleasing landscape for people to enjoy.

The benefits of a living stream include:

  • Improved water quality - vegetation and natural biological processes help to oxygenate the water, remove nutrients and contaminants and improve water quality
  • Erosion control - the additional vegetation helps to keep the banks stable and reduce erosion
  • Habitat - a living stream provides a diverse range of aquatic habitat for plants and animals. It also provides a corridor of land and water along which many animals can move.
  • Health - living streams form a local natural space that provides a place for humans to relax within and connect to the land and their environment.
