Project Update

Work on the Burslem Drive Underpass upgrade is complete with the recent addition of a mural painted on the Maddington Central opening. This will further improve the aesthetics of the underpass and encourage a link to the river path. The City of Gosnells is pleased to have support from Water Corporation and Maddington Central to fund the project.

Highly respected artist Rohin Kickett completed the mural, which has a river theme. Rohin grew up in the area, attended Gosnells Senior High School (now Southern River College), and spent much of his youth around Maddington. With his strong personal ties to the river and local area he was keen to work on this mural.

Background

The Burslem Drive underpass was first constructed in the 1970s as part of an expansion of the Maddington Central Shopping Centre. The underpass was created to allow residents on the river-side of Burslem Drive a safe access point to the Maddington Town Centre.

The underpass remains popular with residents and cyclists, with approximately 100 users per day. To increase safety within the underpass and encourage more people to utilise it, the City has made improvements.

As part of the recent Burslem Drive duplication between Olga Road and Attfield Street, the City upgraded the pedestrian underpass to include the following:

• New skylight structure within the road median island to increase the natural light within the underpass

• Removal of the northern access ramp and replacement with a headwall to increase natural light and improve surveillance (similar to other end of tunnel).
