Kenwick Library relocation to Mills Park

Council decided in December 2020 to invest federal funding from the COVID-19 stimulus package to:

  • Relocate the Kenwick Library to create a new library in its building at Mills Park
  • Refurbish the current Kenwick Library as a community facility
  • Provide new toilets at the Kenwick Community Centre (Mud Hut)

We want to work with you - library users, hall hirers and local residents - to make the transition as smooth as possible.

We asked: For your input into the look and feel of the new library and the programs on offer.

Timing

The work to upgrade the mud hut has now been completed, with those hiring the community centre able to enjoy the new facilities.

Work at the Mills Park site has commenced, with an expected completion in June 2022.

The Kenwick Library will close on 28 May 2022 to allow for catalogue items to be relocated to the new centre.

Once the relocation has been completed, work to convert the former library site will commence, with the new community facility opening in the winter.

About the new library at the Mills Park Centre

The relocated library will retain current services and programs offered from the Kenwick location including loans, public access computers and wifi, study and reading areas and community programs. The library will complement the existing facilities at Mills Park which include a café, function rooms, sporting facilities, extensive recreation and play facilities and parking. Mills Park is also served by a bus route connecting the nearby Beckenham and Kenwick train stations.

About the revamped Kenwick Community Centre (mud hut)

Currently the Kenwick Community Centre (known locally as the mud hut) has a small hall (95sqm) and a meeting room (50 sqm) for hire. The toilets at this location will be upgraded. New ceilings will be installed in the existing meeting room and small hall making the space brighter and more inviting.

Once the library is relocated to Mills Park, the former library will be repurposed as a new community facility.

What are the construction timeframes?

  • The first stage is to upgrade the toilets at the mud hut between April 2021 and June 2021 - this has now been completed
  • Library works will proceed at Mills Park from January to June 2022
  • Once the library opens at its new location, the former library at the Kenwick Centre will be converted into a community facility.

The $1.12M budget includes $100,000 from the City and $1.02M from the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Communication through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program. This program is part of the Australian Government’s plan to stimulate local economies and assist recovery from the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.
